“A true House of G-d is a place where, when you walk in, you feel loved-and when you leave, you know someone is missing you.”
The House of Love and Prayer in San Francisco was more than just a place of prayer—it was a cultural and spiritual hub that offered both community and personal transformation. It was a place where young people could come together to explore spirituality outside the confines of traditional structures, where music, prayer, and unconditional love were central to the experience. This model was incredibly effective, attracting countless young people who felt disconnected from conventional society, especially during a time of cultural upheaval.
However, since the 1970s, there has been no similar center to continue this legacy, particularly one in an urban environment like the original. While new forms of Jewish engagement have emerged, the House of Love and Prayer’s vision—as an accessible, open space in the heart of a bustling city—has been absent. We propose to fill this gap by creating a new center in downtown Jerusalem, designed to bring the energy, inclusivity, and transformative experience of the original House of Love and Prayer back to life.
I am excited to share a vision that is deeply rooted in the teachings and spirit of Reb Shlomo Carlebach, a dream that I believe is more relevant today than ever before. We are working to open a Shlomo Carlebach Center in Jerusalem, a space that will continue the legacy of love, prayer, and unity that Reb Shlomo embodied. This center will be an extension of the House of Love and Prayer project, a place where people can come together for deep spiritual experiences and connect to the light of Shabbat in a way that has not been done before.
This vision goes beyond a typical religious center. It will serve as a Shabbat haven, providing a place for people to experience the warmth of Shabbat hospitality and feel the power of unity.
Reb Shlomo had a dream to create a space where people of all walks of life could feel welcomed, loved, and uplifted. This center is meant to be a beacon of hope and a true embodiment of the Carlebach legacy. And yes, just as Shlomo dreamed, we envision a center that not only hosts people for Shabbat, but one that is capable of offering the hospitality and care of a 5-star hotel—a place where everyone can feel like they belong.
But to make this vision a reality, we need your help. We are raising funds to create a space where love, prayer, and community can thrive. Your support will make it possible for this center to open its doors and provide a warm, welcoming environment for all who seek to connect with the spirit of Shabbat and the teachings of Reb Shlomo.
Together, we can make this dream come true. Let’s bring the light of Shlomo’s teachings into the heart of Jerusalem, and create a center that will continue to inspire generations to come.
